The following is a list of Ta Tanka Lodge's
Vigil Honor members.  This page was created to honor all of our Vigil brothers for their dedicated, cheerful service given to the Lodge.  The information includes our brother's given name, Vigil Name and translation ~ and (if available), a brief story on why that particular name was chosen.  All Vigil Honor names are from the Lenni Lenape language unless otherwise noted.

Our Lodge dates back to 1953, and in many cases, there are gaps where information was missing or difficult to piece together.  If you have any of the missing information, corrections or would like to add your information to the list, just send an e-mail message to the
Lodge WebMaster.  Thank you!

"Excited One, That Missed His Chance"

  • "Excited one" refers to my excitement and enthusiasm for the Order of the Arrow. The second part, "that missed his chance", refers to my encounter with Miss Teenage America at the 1996 National Order of the Arrow Conference. I was very "excited" to met her, I waited in line for 45 minutes. Finally I got a picture with her, and she kissed my sash. I later had a chance to talk to her, but being the shy timid guy I am, I "missed my chance." She drove away never to be seen by me again."

"Crooked Fox"

  • "My Vigil name, as most do, had a humorous tie to my experiences in the Order of the Arrow. I belonged to a group who were into creating traditional regalia that was as authentic as we could make. This included making our own drums, tipis, etc. and occasionally attempting to tan a skin we had found or were given. One of my earliest pieces of regalia was a red fox hat that I had saved months for, and finally found a pelt for sale at a rendezvous. My name came from that hat, which in my hurry to buy, I did not notice how small a fox really is. When I made the inner cap and sewed the pelt on, it not only did not fit my head, but the face of the fox was "Crooked" and always appeared to look over my shoulder. I had to tie it onto my head with a string, and so was teased a lot on that account."

"Mountain Traveler"

  • "I was honored with the Vigil in August of 1983 by Gischigin Lodge of the Penn Mountains Council in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately both the lodge and Council have now merged with others and the current lodge is Lowwapaneu Lodge #191 from the Northeast Pennsylvania Council. My Vigil name is Wachtschu Memsochet which means Mountain Traveler. At the time I was growing up I lived in a town called Mountaintop, Pennsylvania. I was a section officer and ultimately section chief of the former NE-5A section (9 lodges of Eastern PA) and spent a lot of time trying to forge relationships with the lodges in my section. I also spent my senior year of high school in Washington DC thus leading to my name of Mountain Traveler."

  • "I was extremely pleased to "stumble" upon the Ta Tanka Website while surfing tonight. I think it's GREAT!  Good work and lots of it I'm sure. It brought a rush a great and treasured memories to mind!  The OA was the most influential experience of my adolescence and teen years.  The Vigil was held at Trask Scout Ranch in Monrovia.  Also, I was Ta Tanka Lodge Chief twice: 1971-72 and again 1973-74.  I was a Kiowa Chapter Chief prior to being Lodge Chief.  Eugene Peak was my Vice Chief, Jeff Guertin was Secretary and John Quinn was Treasurer.  We were installed by retiring Chief Mike Cousineau and by P. William Davis, Supreme Chief of the Fire.  Our Lodge Adviser was Gene Hickle.  Gene Hickle lived in Monrovia.  Bill Baldwin in Rosemead was one of the most important figures in my Scouting experience.  He is a treasure trove of history, and could provide a huge amount of history on the Kiowa Chapter (former Chapter Adviser and Sachem Award recipient). George Sebastian was a wonderful Kiowa Dance Team Adviser.  Again, your site is great, and a real testament to your current Lodge strength.  I'm happy to have been a part of the Ta Tanka Lodge between 1970 through 1975.  Today, I live in Thousand Oaks but the distance to Pasadena is just a moments thought away!
Yours in the W.W.W., (the original WWW),"
